So why does nearly everyone who played the Radiator in the 20-
strong tour group love the neck. "We designed a neck which was
like a running shoe," says Robert. "Everybody feels comfortable
with this neck. It's got a shorter scale, 24 3/4 inch, to allow
easier bending and give a little more bottom-end." Its single
piece of solid Canadian silver maple features a maple fingerboard
in this instance but rosewood boards are also available on all
models. With a shallow 'C' profile the Radiator neck has the
uncanny ability to feel comfortable in just about every player's
hands. You get a good indication from the bold acoustic sound of
the Radiator that it's gonna be hot when plugged in; and it is.
Bags of sustain and body with enough 'brrrrang' for you to
actually feel what you're playing through your fingertips. I
began with the obligatory clean channel explorations and found no
tone eluded the twin pickup/three pot control set-up for long.
It's all here if you know where to find it. Fat cat jazz tones
are a mere twist of a pot away from from Hendrixy neck pickup
sounds and the plethora of blend tones cover all the areas in
between. With the neck on full and a touch of bridge pickup
rolled in, you get a wonderfully authentic acoustic tone that
translates beautifully for clean funk rhythms and chordal
strumming. And if your thang is all Stetsons and spurs, the
twangiest tones are right on tap from the bridge pickup.
For as far as quality is concerned the guitar is on a par with
instruments of twice the cost. The Godin Radiator is a hand-
finished, cleverly thought out instrument with a stage presence
and playability that belie the sub £400 price.
